Course Description:

This course presents both an exhibition of Chinese herbal theory as well as identification, application and use of individual Chinese herbs.  Complementing the three main modules of herbal theory covered is a presentation of Chinese herbs employed clinically in combination with each other.  This provides a well rounded foundation for the study of herbal formulas as well as a basis for planning individualized and modified herbal prescriptions.

Course Objective:

The students will learn about the name, nature, flavour, properties, functions, uses, and contraindications of Chinese medicinal substances, which will be used to make herbal formulas, which will be learned later.

Meet the Instructors

Alex Lin, R. TCMP, R. Ac

Alex Lin

Alex comes from a family lineage of TCM practitioners. He is a 4th generation TCM practitioner in his family. He received his undergraduate degree from University of Toronto, and then proceeded to study Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture at the Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine. His attention to detail and compassionate nature makes him develop the ability to be a well-balanced healer. Due to the environment that he has grown up in, he has had contact with TCM since childhood. He has had apprentice experience in multiple private TCM clinic in Taiwan and Canada.
 
Alex’s clinic focus is in pain management, occupational injury, sports medicine, rehabilitation, internal medicine, preventative medicine and lifestyle consultation.
 
Alex’s extensive education includes Honours in Bachelor of Arts (East Asian Studies Specialist) at University of Toronto, Diploma of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner at Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Diploma of Acupuncture at Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Integrative Acupuncture Certificate for the Treatment of Neuromyofacial Pain & Dysfunction at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine.
 
He is in good standing as a registered TCM Practitioner & Acupuncturist (Ontario) with The College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO) and with the Ontario Osteopathic and Alternative Medicine Association (OOAMA).
 
In conjunction with teaching at AIM Academy, Alex has experience as a lecturer and instructor at the Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He is an active speaker at public health seminars educating the public about preventative healthcare.

Richard Kwan, BSc, R. TCMP, R. Ac

Richard Kwan

Richard completed the 4-year Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) program at the Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TSTCM). He lectured extensively at TSTCM and Eight Branches Academy of Eastern Medicine in the theory of TCM, Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. He is also very passionate about his volunteer work with street youth and people with AIDS. 

Richard has a strong commitment to Tai Chi and Qi Gong, which he has practiced for over 15 years. For the promotion of health and the prevention of disease, he teaches Tai Chi at the downtown YMCA and in the Beaches.

Richard is the Senior Advisor of TCM & Acupuncture at AIM Academy. He also teaches Fundamentals of TCM, Acupuncture Technique and is a clinic supervisor.

In 2008, he started Simple Cures - a Chinese Medicine centre and has been in private practice in The Beaches and Vaughan.  Richard believes that a simple lifestyle promotes better health; he strives to empower his patients to become more proactive with their own healthcare.

Elena Dobrovetsky, M. Sc, R. TCMP, R. Ac

Elena Dobrovetsky

Elena started her medical education in Medical school in the Soviet Union.

She completed a Master’s degree in biomedical chemistry from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.

She worked as a scientist at University of Toronto in the biomedical drug discovery field. Her research in the field of protein crystallization resulted in multiple publications in scientific journals. While working with the smallest parts of the human body – proteins, Elena had always been interested in the bigger picture: how smallest particles communicate with each other and work together to make our amazing organism function as ONE big unit.

Because of this search for a more holistic approach to medicine Elena entered AIM Academy in 2016.

Elena has graduated from both the Acupuncture Therapy diploma program and Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine diploma program. She feels grateful and excited helping people maintain a healthy, pain free and happy life.

 

Joey Guo R.TCMP, R.Ac

Instructor: Treatment of Disease 

Joey is a highly qualified and experienced practitioner of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, with extensive clinical experience in the field. She graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Chinese Medicine and Biomedical Science from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2014, and then went on to earn a Master Degree in Acupuncture and Moxibustion from The University of Hong Kong.

With 9 years of clinical experiences and having operated her own clinic for more than 7 years, Joey has a deep understanding of traditional Chinese medicine approaches and how to treat a wide range of health issues effectively. She was also a lecturer at Employee Retraining Board in Hong Kong, teaching Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and TCM Treatment of Disease. Her highly engaging and interactive teaching style contribute a lot to equipping students with solid foundation in Chinese medicine.

Joey is dedicated in providing the highest level of care and support to her patients and she enjoys keeping up with the latest research and developments in Chinese medicine. She has been able to build strong relationships with her patients and help many of them achieve their health goals through her work in Chinese medicine and acupuncture.
